Serving as a Staff Platoon Commander and Warfighting Instructor at The Basic School was my most challenging and rewarding stateside assignment. Business Insider just completed a documentary on the training and indoctrination every Marine Officer undergoes before their specialized training (infantry, logistics, communications, etc.). Regardless what their role will be in the Marine Corps, The Basic School ensures that every Second Lieutenant is capable of commanding a provisional rifle platoon before they leave Quantico.

From Battlefield to Boardroom: How Marine Corps Officer Training Shaped My LeadershipAs a former Marine Corps Officer, I often reflect on the transformative impact of Officer Basic School (TBS). The grueling 6 months weren't just about tactics; they were a crucible for developing the mindset and skills that now serve me in the business world.3 Key Lessons from TBS:Mission First, People Always: At TBS, objectives come first, but inspiring and empowering your team is how you achieve them. This translates directly to business success.Adapt and Overcome: Plans rarely survive first contact with reality, in combat or the market. TBS instilled the mental agility to pivot, improvise, and find solutions under pressure.Ownership is Everything: As a Marine officer, the buck stops with you. I bring that same sense of accountability and responsibility to my leadership roles.I'm grateful for the challenges and lessons of TBS. The Marine Corps doesn't just build warriors, it builds leaders with the grit and determination to succeed in any arena.

Imagine the benefits where NCOs are rigorously screened for SDA and hand selected to embed and train within each BOC platoon. A progression of training and increased lethality from SOI, TBS, & maybe even into IOC.

What the Marine Corps calls leading Marines, the civilian world calls agility. I'll tell you why:1️⃣ The Corps pushes decision making down to the lowest level possible to decentralize how it operates. We realize that command and control will not work on the battlefield where the situation is always evolving.2️⃣ The Corps keeps plans simple but flexible through a few options that can be adapted to fit the changing situation. Commander's intent is used to inform those options.3️⃣ Marines aims for the 70% solution. We decide quickly knowing our plan is imperfect rather than implementing the perfect plan when it's too late.4️⃣ Continuous learning is the hallmark of every Marine, and those in leadership epitomize this behavior for new Marines joining our ranks.

Good clear guidance that establishes a commitment to standards, discipline, a vision for the future....Should have mentioned one system of Accountability....for all ranks, especially the senior ranks. Finally, I am not sure how many Marines, Sergeants and below will actually read this document. After all, they make up majority of the Corps. To draw their attention we need to focus on those things which are important to them....Quality of Life, Discipline, Accountability, Physical Fitness, Promotion, OpTempo...and keep it short, one page. https://lnkd.in/d5CvBCKW

Intriguing article in the Saturday Washington Post on the 3rd Marine Littoral Regiment which reflects the Corps latest concept for fighting adversaries (i..e. China) from remote strategic islands in the Western Pacific. These units are designed to be smaller, lighter and more mobile - and their leaders argue more lethal. Certainly one of the challenges will be transportation (no more tanks in the USMC) and the challenge of maintaining air superiority so the units can retain a viable supply chain for logistical support. Overall, some interesting food for thought.

Undoubtedly, this is due to the illustrious history of the Corps, the rigorous 13-week boot camp, and the expectation that the Marines are in optimal shape. But what is the Marine Corps' secret to this standard of excellence?
